Sony has announced it is to make streaming films available to consumers equipped with a Bravia television and internet access.
The move, which could be of interest to mobile broadband customers, was unveiled at a recent press event in San Francisco and could have a significant effect on the entertainment industry, the Financial Times reports.
It was also unveiled that Will Smith's latest film, Hancock, would be the first title to feature as a streaming movie in the project - which involves the purchase of a Sony Bravia television and an internet video link.
Commenting on the plans, Sony chief executive Sir Howard Stringer said the scheme aimed to offer movie fans the opportunity to access the films they want in a more direct way.
"The consumers deserve to make the choice of what content they want to watch, it shouldn't be dictated by the cable companies," he said.
Hancock tells the story of a down-and-out superhero and Variety reports the film took over $6.7 million (£3.4 million) across 3,680 theatres on its opening night of previews in the US.
